Spain Philip II/III gold Cob 2 Escudos ND MS64 NGC,

Spain
Philip II/III gold Cob 2 Escudos ND MS64 NGC, Seville mint. 22mm. 6.78gm. A fleeting gold cob issue of very scarce conditional preservation. Though NGC notes an attribution to the reign of Philip IV, we believe that the design is more consistent with an issue of either Philip II or Philip III. In either case, the design of both the cross and shield seem to be in line with the issues produced at Seville during the period. Much of the peripheral design is obscured, though we note that the denomination ("II") is visible to the right of the shield, while sparkling luster and careful preservation confirm NGC's lofty Mint State designation. The coin is sold with a collector tag indicating a provenance from the Santa Margarita Shipwreck, along with a corresponding printed yellow plastic tag, though we cannot verify this attribution with certainty.
