A Commonwealth period carved oak 'wainscot' armchair The Lake District, dated: 1658 With channelled frames, the shaped toprail comprising a pair of opposing sea creatures flanking the initials and date: ' A.B., 1658 ', above a splat carved with four flowerheads within an interlacing shaped foliate surround, on ring turned baluster front legs and rear stiles, with stretchers, 66cm wide x 69cm deep x 107cm high , (25 1/2in wide x 27in deep x 42in high) Footnotes: Two very similar armchairs to the offered lot, both originating from Westmorland in the Lake District, are illustrated in V. Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition , 1984, Woodbridge, fig.'s 4:169 & 4:170a. One of these comparables, with a virtually identical crest rail and related carving to the present model, is even dated 1662 which is only four years later than the above example.
