Europe. Hark! Hark! The Dogs do Bark!, published G.W.Bacon & Co. Ltd. [1914], colour lithographic serio-comic map printed by Johnson Riddle & Co. Ltd., with description and explanation by Walter Emanuel below the map, old folds, slight wear where old folds cross, slight creasing, retaining the publisher's printed paper wrappers, 540 x 720 mm QTY: (1) NOTE: An allegorical map which shows the various protagonists at the outbreak of World War I; with each country depicted as the dog that best represents its national stereotype. Hence the British bulldog bites the nose of the German Dachshund, whilst the French poodle snaps and snarls from behind the protective flank of the bulldog. The Austrian mongrel - coupled to the Dachshund - is having its tail squashed by the Russian steamroller - driven by Csar Nicholas - and its leg stung by the Serbian hornet. A large and burly British sailor stands in the ocean to the west of Scotland controlling the British Fleet with the aid of several long strings. Uncommon.
